Description

Vinha dos Utras comes from a small parcel in Criação Velha on the Azorean island of Pico, around eighty metres from the sea. Old vines grow in fissures in volcanic rock; Arinto dos Açores dominates the planting, alongside Verdelho, Boal and Alicante Branco. The name recalls the Utras, descendants of the Flemish Joss Hurtere, connected with the islands’ winegrowing history. Hand harvesting and direct pressing precede separate vinification in stainless steel and used French oak. The wine remains on its lees without bâtonnage, keeping the character of this coastal vineyard at its centre.
