Clonakilla’s Shiraz Viognier connects its Murrumbateman vineyard in the Canberra District with an idea inspired by Côte-Rôtie. In 1991, Tim Kirk visited Guigal and tasted wines combining Syrah and Viognier, struck by their finesse and complexity. On returning home, he suggested to his father John that they ferment the estate’s Shiraz with Viognier, which was about to produce its first crop. The resulting red reflects both the meeting of these varieties and the Kirk family’s interest in exploring the possibilities of its Australian vineyard.
