Bin 169 focuses Penfolds’ interpretation of Cabernet Sauvignon on Coonawarra and its terra rossa soils. Introduced in its current form in 2008, the project draws on low-yielding parcels that include some of the area’s oldest vines. Some of these vineyards had already been selected by Max Schubert for the 1973 Bin 169 Coonawarra Claret. Partial barrel fermentation and maturation in French oak contribute to a style the house describes as fragrant and concentrated, with a strong connection to its place of origin.
