F.X. Pichler’s Steinertal Grüner Veltliner originates at the eastern edge of the Wachau, between Loibenberg and Pfaffenberg. The vineyard opens like an amphitheatre towards Unterloiben and receives nocturnal air currents from the woods, encouraging slow ripening. Gföhl gneiss forms the bedrock; the sandy topsoil is poor in humus, with fissures allowing roots to descend into the rock. The wine combines substance and lively acidity, with suggestions of white pepper and lychee. A mineral element accompanies an interpretation of Grüner Veltliner closely associated with the freshness of this site.
