F.X. Pichler’s Steinertal Riesling expresses one of the cooler sites in Loiben, in the eastern Wachau. The vineyard resembles an amphitheatre opening towards the valley; northerly breezes descending from the forest at night slow the ripening process. Beneath a sandy, shallow soil lies Gföhl gneiss, crossed by fractures through which the roots grow. The wine has a slender, juicy profile with suggestions of lime, pink grapefruit and white peach. A saline impression completes an expression of Riesling centred on freshness and precision, closely reflecting the vineyard’s cool setting.
